Big Brother Alert --- Utah Edition

Want to drink a beer next time you are in Utah?

The Authorities in Utah want to know who you are and perhaps keep tabs on you in an awesome State run database.

This is nothing more than Big Brother in action or as Grover Norquist would put it: First they came for opponents of the Estate and Gift Tax, but I said nothing because I was not a Millionaire and was still alive.  Next they came for..........

But you have to think this is a bad idea even for Utah.

Utah may be a dark red state but it is not entirely backwards, after all, gay marriage is wildly popular in Salt Lake City.   And ultimately concerns over the Pocket Book, the bottomline and Tourism and Convention Cash may incentivize the Authorities to go another way.

But we will check back in with the Good Legislators of the State of Utah and see how this plays out.  Will social conservatives within the GOP coalition win out and:
"now begin the 'Big Brother,' if you will, supervision of all of the drinkers in Utah"
or will pragmatists prevail?

  1. Due to outrage from all corners of the state, this proposed legislation died before it ever got started. And the Senator that proposed it is quickly backtracking on his comments about it.

  2. Makes sense, Mikey.

When it comes to a choice between the two, considerations of the purse usually outweigh the purity of principle.

He's Probably got the hang of it by now. So give'em another chance. And with the Supreme Court and the good Lord on his side, why not give it a try. Write in Bush.
