Got them right where they want them?

The GOP has the Democrats right where they want them..... in the Northeast?

Well maybe that is too strong a statement, but if you read this post over at Red State, you'd never know it.

Last I heard there were just two Republicans left in the Senate (with another headed to the exits) and just three Republicans in the house from New York to Maine.  And not to dwell on it, but these five are all RINOs.

However, don't let that get in the way of anything because the GOP's prospects in the Northeast are so bright you just about have to wear shades.

I have another thought.  The RNC could use a little help these days.  Maybe some of the boyz from Red State can head on over and work for the Hip and/or Hop grandmaster himself, Michael Steele.  I think he'd fit in just fine.

Quote of the Day II:

"I would say that much of Obama's actions might end up making federalism a thing of the past."
~ A New Cornerite discussing the Stimulus Bill
Apparently Federalism will die because the Stimulus wil completely alter "the long-defined and successful relationship between the private sector and the government in this country."

And this relationship has worked ever so flawlessly as of late.  You can tell just by checking your 401k statement and the foreclosure notices in the newpaper.

Quote of the Day:

President Obama "took an hour of TV time to address the American people," but the "Fox network didn't air it," choosing instead to run "their regular program 'Lie to Me,' which, I believe, was the name of the Republican response, actually." ~ Jay Leno
It only hurts because it's true and now that I think about it, sad.

THREATDOWN IN EFECT

RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT ---

This Breaking News just In:  The Obama Administration may promote joint venture with Iran to develop Iranian Energy Production.  Current speculation indicates that:

Washington will adopt a highly pragmatic approach to Iran. It is signaling its willingness to jettison US sanctions against Iran and instead keenly promote Iran as Russia's competitor in the European gas market both as a supplier and as a transit country for Central Asian gas. Few annals of modern diplomatic history would match US realism.

Washington thereby hopes to build US-Iran relations as well. Tehran badly needs to modernize its energy industry and develop its liquefied natural gas sector, which provides highly lucrative business opportunities for hi-tech American oil companies. No doubt, it is a “win-win” situation for Washington and Tehran.

Clearly this is a grave situation as Iran is public enemy number these days among the Neocon set.  Accordingly you should be on the look out for increased levels of Wingnuttery from Greater Wingnuttia.   Remember it is important understand that Iran is either with us or against us. There can be no middle ground.

I repeat a Red Alert is in effect.

RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT --- RED ALERT ---

Quote of the Day:

President Obama" is "now saying that the flyover was a mistake. If you're scoring at home, Obama still trails Bush in the mistake total by about 10,000." David Letterman

Verb of the Day:

Transnationalize

Definition:

A transitive verb; to make something Transnational or to give a Transnational character to something; sometimes the involuntary result of Radical Transnationalism, i.e., the imposition of Islamic Law and International Law to control relations not only between sovereign states, but also between citizens and their governments.

Example of use in conversation:

Pa, Pa, the blue helmets are pouring over the border! And I seen one of ‘em carrying a treatise on the international common law. Quick, call out the Militia before they transnationalize us all!!!

Further Example:

After President Obama appoints Radical Transnationalist Harold Koh as Legal Advisor to the NSC, Koh will somehow outlaw the existence of 400 years of American and English Common Law in the USA and replace this system of law with the international common law. After that, the United Nations will surely invade and Transnationalize America. After this occurs, only portions of Alabama, Arkansas and Alaska will initially be able to resist. Unfortunately these small pockets of resistance will not have internet access to read the National Review Online and eventually the people in these areas too will lose their inspiration to resist and succumb to Radical Transnationalization.

The Tragic Reign of Error and the Lost Opportunities of the Bush Administration

Headline of the Day - Bolivia: The Saudi Arabia of Lithium.

As it turns out, Lithium, the metal needed for the batteries the world needs to power the coming generation of electric cars, comes from the western hemisphere in Bolivia.  From here on out, every time there is a need for a rechargeable battery, there is a good chance it’ll come from Bolivia.

And as it just so happens, Bolivia is a small country run by a dangerous socialist premier who may or may not have weapons of mass destruction. Bolivia also has ties to Al Qaeda which is demonstrated by the troubled history of Mutual Non-Aggression between Al Qaeda and Bolivia.  Also crystal clear, is that the people of Bolivia are in dire need of Freedom. Making matters worse, I hear the socialist premier of Bolivia has even taken to wearing windbreakers just like Iranian strongman Ahmadine-jihad.

So with the planet in peril, the seas rising and the globe cooking, the Western Democracies will become increasing subject to the whims of a madman holding the world's llithium supply hostage who may or may not have weapons of mass destruction and/or a non-aggression pact with Al Qaeda.  Do you know what this means people?

George Bush invaded the wrong frakking country.

Heckuva Job Junior you could have toppled this tyrant and/or terrorist and liberated the people and the lithium.

Endangered Species Watch --- The Price of Purity

Governor Ed Rendell (D-PA):

"We've tried.  Myself, Senator Casey, Vice President Biden have tried to talk him into it, but he's bound and determined to stay a Republican. He doesn't want to see Republican moderates banished from the earth."

Senator Susan Collins, Republican Moderate:

"I am very, very disappointed. It means there will be no more checks and balances on Democratic control."

Erick Erickson (R-Wingnuttia):

Did you give money to Arlen Specter?  If so, and you want a refund, call him at (202) 224-4254 and demand your money back.

~ David Frum Neo-Conservative RINO:

The Specter defection is too severe a catastrophe to qualify as a “wake-up call.” His defection is the thing we needed the wake-up call to warn us against! For a long time, the loudest and most powerful voices in the conservative world have told us that people like Specter aren’t real Republicans – that they don’t belong in the party. Now he’s gone, and with him the last Republican leverage within any of the elected branches of government.

For years, many in the conservative world have wished for an ideologically purer GOP. Their wish has been granted. Happy?

Daniel McCarthy:

This sorry episode shows what a mess the GOP has become: the GOP is now too ideological to keep the likes of Specter in the party, but not ideological enough to dump them when the moment is ripe (as it was in 2004, when Toomey would have had a shot at winning a general election if the party had jettisoned Specter). The GOP winds up being the party that alienates liberal Republicans and independents, even as it continually sells out conservatives.
The Solution to these woes is undoubtedly to run further to the right and rid the earth of all these RINO's.  It is just survival of the fittest after all.

Quote of the Day:

"I'm a loyal Democrat. I support your agenda."
~ Senator Arlen Specter (D-PA) speaking with President Obama earlier today.

Earlier yesterday, at the NRO, there was an illustration of President Obama in a Jesus Christ pose standing in front of the Presidential seal while wearing a crown of thorns.  Since it has been reported that this defection was a Surprise, it is possible that this illustration may have played a part in inspiring Arlen to switch parties.  It is possible, so I’m giving the NRO the benefit of the doubt.

Good Job NRO.

Endangered Species Watch --- Extinction ALERT

With Arlen Spector's defection from The Cause.  Let's take a look at other assorted outcasts and misfits belonging to the Grand Old Party.

RINO Watch --- Enemies of the Party?

Here is your Top 10 Republicans in Name only in the House of Representatives:

1. Michael Castle, Del. : 28
2. Chris Smith, N.J. : 28
3. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Fla. : 32
4. John McHugh, N.Y. : 40
5. Fred Upton, Mich. : 44
6. Shelly Moore Capito, W.Va. : 48
7. Jim Gerlach, Pa. : 48
8. Mark Kirk, Ill. : 48
9. Patrick Murphy, Pa. : 48
10. (Tie) Mike Rogers, Ala; Peter King, N.Y. : 50
Keep in mind, this species of Republican, at one time were far more numerous and could be found virutally all throughout New England, the Midwest, the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, its habitat is in severe decline and the once Great North American Rhino may be headed toward exctinction.

Since Climate Change is not real, it is probably all ACORN's fault.

Endangered Species Watch --- The Decline and Fall of the North American Rhino

Well it looks as if Snarlin Arlen Specter has gone and done the unthinkable. It was bad enough that he was a Despicable Vichy Republican let alone a RINO.

But now it appears that he is no long either.  This is because Arlen is now a Democrat.  And now only 2 North American Rhino's remain, occurring only in remote parts of upper New England.

Hell hath no fury like a wingnut scorned.

Massive Ethics Conspiracy broadens …. Palin hit again

Quote of the Day:

"As we've been saying, the number of ethics complaints filed against the governor and her staff -- as well as the tortured logic they contain -- continue to constitute the most disturbing trend in Alaska politics. It's obvious the intent with this unprecedented action against the governor is to see her administration paralyzed and for her to declare personal bankruptcy,"
Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow, addressing what looks to be the 13th ethics complaint filed against the former ethics crusader.

Palin, who rose to prominence as an Ethics Whistleblower, faces another allegation of abuse of office. This time the charge relates to her newly created legal defense fund which allegedly is an attempt to station "a pool of pre-paid lawyers" around her national ambitions "to deflect the consequences of her wrong doings."

Shit always seems to hit the fan when she is around.

Oh the Depths of Wingnuttery... Rooting for Failure?!

Over at the Red State Blog, home of un-closeted Sarah Palin defenders, today we hear that, get this, The Obama Administration is trying to trigger a Terrorist Attack:
The best strategy would look something like taking a band-aid off quickly. Get the pain over fast. And if an attack happens quickly enough into the new administration, they can blame Bush.

So the Obama administration is working hard to release all the memos on interrogations, change all the policies Bush implemented, and clear out the old as fast as possible. Never mind that if it were done slowly over time, our terrorist enemies might not be so incited to attack.

If your working premise is that they are going to attack anyway, get them incited quickly, get it over with, and blame Bush.

There is no other justification for so quickly making us less safe.

~ Erick Erickson, Leading Conservative Voice on the Wingnut-O-Sphere
Let's assume that Erickson is actually a real person, as opposed to Robert Stacy McCain who is surely a fictional character meant as a Spoof.  There is no indication that he is joking.  And even if this was an ill attempt at humor, it is in extremely poor taste.

But here is the thing, as the GOP shrinks, Erickson's views get closer to the center of the Party. And in the process, this will cause many Vichy Republicans to look elsewhere because Erickson appears to be certifiably batshit crazy.

The Rooting for Failure Option pimped by El Dimbo appears to be their only hope, because it looks like they fallen past the point of no return.

Is Turn on, tune in, drop out and going Galt the same thing?

Mary Ann Glendon, a Former Bush Administration Ambassador, has announced that she will reject the prestigious 2009 Laetare Medal

an annual award given by the University of Notre Dame in recognition of outstanding service to the Roman Catholic church and society. The award is given to an American Catholic layperson "whose genius has ennobled the arts and sciences, illustrated the ideals of the church and enriched the heritage of humanity."

Why will she reject this award you may ask?  It seems like a pretty big honor.

Well it is this: she feels she has no other choice because Notre Dame will grant an honorary degree to President Obama at the graduation ceremony. And as everyone knows, an honorary degree should not be granted to someone who acts “in defiance of fundamental moral principles.”  This apparently is code talk for Obama’s alleged support of infanticide.

Glendon, is also a part time Anti Gay Marriage Activist, who has called, unabashedly I might say, for a new era of popular sovereignty on the issue of Gay Marriage. This call to action was issued before the 2004 election and corresponding ballot initiatives to ban Gay Marriage. It was imperative, due to the inevitable religious discrimination that the legalization of Gay Marriage will usher in.  It will be illegal to be practice your faith if the gays can get married, or so she says.

Look I understand that it is hard to cope with changing times.  The Economy is fucked up. The Commies have fallen and we can’t quite decide who to replace them with.  The Climate is changing.  And the long slow march toward gradual and increasing levels of democratization continues forward.

More and more people are empowered, making decisions everyday or in case of economic decisions hundreds of decisions a day that affect the world we live in.   And it is not just that globalization has made the world smaller, it has increased the number of people at the table participating at the same time. It can be chaotic.  I feel her pain. But equal rights for Gays are coming.  And the legalization of abortion has been largely settled.  It is just the way it is.

But why drop out?  Why not accept the Award as an honor for a life well lived and use the opportunity to express the values for which she was so honored?  In the larger marketplace of ideas, why retreat instead of compete?  Is it because she believes that she cannot compete?

It sounds more these days that Movement Conservatism is just a counter-culture. Yet we hear such actions constitute true leadership.  Maybe it is so.

Or maybe it is just tuning in, turning on and dropping out.

Post Script: Perhaps newly Minted Catholic New Gingrich would be more appropriate to receive an honorary degree.  After all he recently spoke at a Catholic University in New York.  I heard no calls about his “defiance of fundamental moral principles.”  So presumably he’d be good to go.

WINGNUT DICTIONARY --- Definition of The Day:

MUTUAL NON-AGGRESSION

Definition:

(1) The absence of aggression between two parties despite having competing goals, interests or values or the non-interference in the internal affairs of the other party. (2) Sometimes, mutual non-aggression leads to a formal agreement (referred to as a “Pact”) between two parties to respect each the territory and interests of the other.

Used in everyday conversation:

Hitler and Stalin signed a Non-Aggression Pact, each pledging not to attack the other Country and also to divide portions of Europe between their two countries.

Much like the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, Al Qaeda and Saddam Hussein, did not interfere in the in the internal affairs of the other party and were not engaged in open hostilities. This Mutual Non-Aggression proves that Al Qaeda and Iraq were strategic allies and may have, in fact, been planning to divide up the world between the two parties.

Many believe that George Bush should not have relied upon Weapons of Mass Destruction as a "casus belli" (just cause) for the war in Iraq, because the WMD could always be moved to Syria and buried in the sand (which happened). Rather George Bush should have used the Mutual Non-Aggression between Saddam and Bin Laden as a casus belli for the War in Iraq. Thus this Mutual Non-Aggression between Saddam and Bin Laden serves as a casus belli and justifies the invasion of Iraq as a War of Necessity.

Wingnuttery for the Masses! Props to Andy McCarthy, the craziest MoFo on The Corner.

Question of the Day

The latest talking points on torture or enhanced interrogation techniques, is that the interrogation and torture is done by highly trained professionals following detailed procedures and is overseen by the President.  The President should oversee the system run by bureaucrats but would be empowered determine who to torture, when to torture and how to torture, at his discretion if interrogations are deemed impracticable.

Thus the torture will only be necessary when it is necessary and appropriate when it is appropriate. The argument then goes on to posit that with such a system in place, the American Public should trust the government to carry out interrogations when practicable and torture if and when necessary and appropriate.

But here is the Question of the Day:
Why are torture supporters putting so much faith in government and in government bureaucrats to conduct enhanced interrogations and/ or torture, if many of these same supporters do not trust the government to collect taxes and spend this money on the public welfare?
It is next to bizarre to see those who do not trust government bureaucracies to do basic things, make the argument that the Government Bureaucracy should be trusted to determine who to torture, when to torture and how to torture.

If you do not believe that the EPA can be trusted to enforce the Clean Air Act without infringing on property rights, how can you say the government should be entrusted with the discretion over whether or not it is necessary and appropriate to disregard and suspend the liberty rights of a member of the public by authorizing torture?

This torture debate is truly bizarre.

Word of the Day

THE BUSH BUST:”

Bush Bust Definition:

The economic calamity brought on by excessive deregulation, lax oversight and a messianic reliance on tax cuts for the wealthiest members of society as the means of economic growth all without regard to underlying imbalances within the economy.

Bush Bust used in a sentence:

When the Great Bush Bust hit and the credit market froze up, my employer was unable to obtain a line of credit and could not pay its bills and meet payroll.  After being laid off, I needed to move to a new town to find a job, but was unable to sell my home because the real estate market had collapsed and I found out that I now owed more on my mortgage than my house is now worth.  Without a job, I am at risk of losing my home to a greedy bank like one of those banks responsible for issuing Collateralized Debt Obligations that fueled the Real Estate bubble.  If this happens, I may have to move into a Bushboro., i.e., a temporary shanty town near the interstate.

WTF is Wrong with the GOP --- Part II

Recently after reading an article by a leading conservative blaming the GOP’s recent collapse on mean words pixel-ated on Liberal Blogs, I started pondering just what the real reasons for the collapse were.  I know that there was gross incompetence, an unshakeable faith in the ideology of deregulation and unrestrained markets, corruption, avarice and George Bush.  This is all true.  But the real question is how did this toxic combination come together and place the GOP in the box it finds itself in today.

In Part I of “What the Fuck is Wrong with the GOP,” I took a look at the origins of today’s Modern GOP finding that starting with the initially successful “Southern Strategy” as a way of realigning the South away from Democratic control to loyal Republican control, which in effect resulted in writing off the Black Vote and a reliance on White Super Majorities on election day.  We also looked at a reliance on Racial polarization and its declining returns over time, leading to the Gingrich, Bush and Rove Strategy of Getting Funky with the Fundamentalists to maintain the GOP’s percentage of the white vote.

With demographics a challenge, maybe the Party of Ideas can bring enough people back to the party or bring enough new voters to the GOP to make a difference at the ballot box.  In today’s episode of WTF is wrong with the GOP, let’s look at the core ideas of the GOP.

True believers in Party doctrine hold a messianic belief in the power of free markets that not even Adam Smith would share.  Another tenet of this ideology (referred to as “The Old Time Religion”) centers around tax cuts.  The Old Time Religion teaches followers that cutting taxes always brings prosperity by (1) raising tax revenue (2) placing capital in the hands of privileged elites which will use their superior position and knowledge to wisely invest the capital in the market and/or (3) increase consumption.  All these three factors together along with the benefits of Deregulation unleash the Magic of the Marketplace where a rising tide lifts all boats (but beware of tsunamis, i.e., The Bush Bust). Another tenet of Party Doctrine holds that Government Institutions are inefficient and burden Markets from working at desired levels.

Now I am not an economist.  That being said, I’ll note that finer points of economic theory are a step above my pay grade but at the same time offer some inherent contradictions within current party ideology.

First the idea that cutting taxes always raises revenue and makes it easier to balance the budget has been disproved by history.  If cutting taxes always raises revenue and helps to balance the budget, why not eliminate Taxes all Together?  Surely revenue would then go through the roof and the budget would balance itself.  The assertion that cutting taxes raises revenue is nothing more than a ruse designed to avoid discussion of the proper role of government and how to fund it.  Debate exists whether the GOP Tenet of tax cuts and the ginormous debt so spawned is a feature or a bug. Some say drown the Government a bath tub.  Others say starve the Beast.  I don’t know the answer but this inherent contradiction between burdensome debt and tax cuts is an obvious problem for the GOP that can’t be easily reconciled.

Next, if the Market is a panacea to all problems, wouldn’t an unregulated market present an inherent danger to the Old Time Religion?  An unregulated or under regulated market raise the possibility for some to game the system and in order to realize short term economic benefits while externalizing long term risks for you and me to bear.  In this instance the reckless receive all the rewards while you and I receive all the risk and end up burdened with the costs. Thus burdened with the costs, people will demand that the system be fixed and remedial regulations enacted.

Therefore if one believes in markets as the driver of innovation and prosperity, it is axiomatic that the markets must function efficiently and fairly.  To do this there must be rule of law to prevent abuse of the system and enforcement of regulations to promote accountability.  This helps out on multiple levels. One, the rule of law is establish and two, the results are more likely to appear fair and thus gain the confidence of consumers and investors.  So in order for markets to work fairly and efficiently, there must be not only fairness but the appearance of fairness as well.

But by all accounts in recent years enforcement was lax or non-existent and as rule sets such as Glass-Steagall, crafted in the 1930s and 40s were torn down, they were not replaced with 21st century rule sets to address the new ways the capital moves in this century.  Instead what was left behind was a blind faith in the virtue of market participants to act with honor and integrity before self interest thus imperiling popular support for the Old Time Religion should the inevitable scandal occur.

It would seem that as the GOP has invested so much in the free market, it would do everything in its power to prevent Enron style collapses and current calamities such as the Bush Bust from occurring.  Such disasters only give impetus to change and more regulation.  Enron brought on Sarbanes-Oxley.  Who knows just what regulations the Bush Bust will lead to.  But the GOP did little to prevent the Bush Bust probably due to its blind faith in the tenets of the Old Time Religion that teaches its adherents that Government Institutions only burden the Market instead of providing a useful check and a balance against bad behavior and excess.  I suspect this is a bug within the ideology rather than a feature but it presents significant challenge for the GOP as the full consequences of Bush Style and GOP style economics provide a daily reminder of this inherent problem of unregulated capitalism to the nation for years to come.

In Part III of WTF is wrong with the GOP will turn to torture.

WINGNUT DICTIONARY --- Enemy of the Day, Definition of the Day

WORD OF THE DAY:

RADICAL TRANSNATIONALISM

DEFINITION:

The use of Scary Islamic Law and Effete European Law to control relations not only between sovereign states, but also between citizens and their governments; a poorly camouflaged loathing of American power (at least when used to pursue American interests); A phrase used by NRO writers to convey a fictional, albeit a seemingly grievous, threat to American Sovereignty to NRO readers.

USED IN EVERYDAY CONVERSATION:

Obama Administration Nominee Harold Hongju Koh is a Radical Transnationalist.

The Radical Transnationalism, practiced by Koh, would deprive American citizens of their powers of representative government and the protections guaranteed by the blessed US Constitution by selectively imposing Sharia Law and International Law on the citizenry, even though these rule sets tend to be mutually exclusive.

The practice Radical Transnationalism could lead to manifest injustice if imposed. As an example of consider the issue of gay rights. A Radical Transnationalist, in theory, could attempt to use International Law to impose gay marriage, then that same Radical Transnationalist could apply Sharia Law to sanction the execution of those partaking in gay marriage. Clearly Radical Transnationalism represents a grave threat to American Sovereignty. Clearly Harold Hongju Koh, as a Radical Transnationalist, should not be allowed to serve in the Obama Administration.

Who says it does not come in handy to Speak Wingnutese these days?

Alberto Gonzales Job Watch ... a bonaza on the horizon?

As Far as it is known on the series of tubes, Alberto Gonzales remains without meaningful employment.

Presumably he has a choice spot lined up at the Bush Presidential Library when it opens in 2011.  But that’s a long time off.  Surely something will come up in the mean time, won’t it …. the law, pool sales, or something?

Well hold on to your horses and bar the barn door because a Match Made in Heaven has come along that surely is just ripe for the taking.

It has just been announced that John Ashcroft and two other guys have announced the opening of a Brand New Firm with an office to open in Alberto’s old Stomping Grounds: Austin Texas that

"will focus on corporate compliance, corporate representation, strategic planning and risk management"

“Risk Management” is perfect for Alberto.  I mean he knows all about the "Risk" side of things, maybe not the "Management" part of it, but 50% ain’t bad.

Says one of the other Guys (not Ashcroft):

“It’s funny how political persuasions get set aside when they [clients] get into trouble”… “We’re confident that with the team we’ve put together, those folks will come to us.”

And why not Alberto? He knows all about getting into trouble.

UPDATE: On Second thoughts, Ashcroft Hates Alberto, so this probably won't work out.  But maybe he could doctor his resume.

Stay the Course

Stay the Course
He's Probably got the hang of it by now. So give'em another chance. And with the Supreme Court and the good Lord on his side, why not give it a try. Write in Bush.
